Yom Kippur 2024 begins Friday, October 11th, and ends on Saturday, October 12th.
Some facts about Yom Kippur:
- The holiest day of the Jewish year
- A day of atonement for sins and reconciliation with God
- Considered the most solemn Jewish holiday
- Marks the end of the period of repentance lasting ten days
- People fast for 25 hours, beginning before sundown on the previous night and ending after sundown on the day of the fast.
- During the fast, no food or drink, including water and bread, is consumed
Additional restrictions include no work, driving, washing/bathing, perfumes or deodorants, wearing leather shoes, and no sex. - Orthodox Jews and many other observers also avoid using technology during the holiday.
- The shofar, an ancient instrument made from a ram’s horn, plays special sounds at the end of Yom Kippur.
- The playing of shofar is a reminder to start fresh and improve oneself.
